University of Dundee Collaboration Yields Breakthrough in Alloy Processing

Rautomead has announced the results of an ongoing research collaboration with the University of Dundee, focused on the behaviour of copper alloys during upward continuous casting. The joint programme combined the university’s materials science capabilities with Rautomead’s production expertise.

The work examined how controlled solidification influences grain structure and surface finish, with findings that feed directly into the design of future casting equipment and process parameters.

Research that reaches the shop floor

Unlike purely academic studies, the programme was structured to deliver practical, transferable results. Several of the insights have already been trialled on production lines, with measurable improvements in yield and consistency.

Rautomead and the University of Dundee intend to continue the partnership, extending the research into precious metals and specialist alloy systems.
